Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Programming for the Bay Area will be in charge of the Math Festivals, workshops, and outreach events that bring joy into the lives of thousands of people in the Bay Area. Last school year, we hosted over 120 Bay Area events, reaching over 17,000 students, parents, and educators. The Director of Programming will take over the majority of these events and work to expand our impact in the coming years.

The Director of Programming will also collaborate with the Executive Director to put together an outreach strategy and business model that can be used to replicate our work in other regions. We support communities across the country (including those in Los Angeles, Chicago, Pittsburgh, New York City, North Carolina, Georgia, and Hawaii) in hosting Math Festivals from afar. Over the next 5 years, our goal is to establish a network in each of these areas so that we can provide the same in-person support to these communities that we have been able to provide to those in the Bay Area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Host Math Festivals throughout the Bay Area. This includes:

    • Driving out to schools, libraries, and other community centers (within a 1 hour driving distance)

    • Bringing Math Festival supplies for games and puzzles (supplied by JRMF)

    • Setting up for Math Festivals

    • Leading volunteer trainings for parents, teachers, and older students

    • Making sure events run smoothly

    • Cleaning up afterwards

  • Communicate with Math Festival hosts before, during, and after events. This includes:

    • Zoom and email consultations during Math Festival planning

    • Collecting and analyzing Math Festival data, including attendee data, surveys, and photos

  • Conduct outreach to maintain current relationships, reach new communities, and bring Math Festivals to more students, parents, and educators.

  • Manage the Math Festival Grants for Title 1 Schools program.

  • Manage part-time employees who are helping us host Math Festivals in the Bay Area.

  • Experiment with new ways of conducting outreach, building community, and making our work sustainable, scalable, and equitable. This may include:

    • Cultivating and managing a network of Bay Area volunteers

    • Hosting events geared towards parents and/or teachers

    • Hosting free, open-to-the-public events to reach new communities

    • Hosting fundraising events to financially support the Math Festival Grants for Title 1 Schools program along with other Bay Area initiatives

    • Creating fliers and other outreach resources

    • Collaborating with the Executive Director to develop an outreach strategy and business model that can be replicated in other regions

Requirements

  • At least 5 years’ experience working with children in a school setting

    • Recommended: Classroom teaching experience

  • Regular access to a car or vehicle that can transport festival supplies (an empty sedan or larger)

  • Strong communication skills (able to explain complex ideas to young children)

  • Strong public speaking skills (able to lead trainings for groups of parents, teachers, and/or students)

  • Strong organizational skills (able to schedule and manage the details of dozens of events at one time)

  • Love for puzzles, games, and math

  • Excited and confident working with students of all ages (PreK-12th grade)

  • Excited and confident working with parents, teachers, principals, and other administrators who work in the public education sector

  • Flexible and quick to adapt to new situations (able to host events in a variety of different environments and handle unforeseen complications)

  • Recommended: Comfortable speaking Spanish

  • MIssion-driven with a strong desire to make the world a better place

The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival (JRMF) is a nonprofit on a mission to help all students build confidence, joy, and belonging in math. We do this by hosting Math Festivals at schools, libraries, and other community centers. At a Math Festival, students and their families explore a variety of hands-on, play-based math puzzles and games led by trained volunteers from the community. A Math Festival is an opportunity for the whole community to come together and celebrate math. As an organization, we make hosting Math ...
