Job Summary:

The Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications directs and manages all elements of International Documentary Association (IDA)’s marketing and communications efforts and campaigns. They are responsible for understanding and reaching IDA’s diverse audiences and working collaboratively with staff across departments including Documentary Magazine staff to identify goals and opportunities for outreach that will highlight IDA’s activities in these areas. Leading the communications team, the position develops, articulates, and implements multi-platform, data-driven communications and marketing campaigns that expand the reach of IDA’s events, funds and field-building efforts. The Senior Manager is the organization’s creative and operational expert in email marketing, social media, advertising, and digital communications and works closely with outside service providers to fulfill these needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide the strategic development and implementation of all IDA external communications and marketing. Continuously refine storytelling and messaging that engages existing constituents, attracts new audiences, and heightens the organization’s profile within the documentary field domestically and internationally.
  • Ensure alignment across IDA’s online presence including website, social media profiles, email communication, and membership portal. Working with outside IT support services, this individual is accountable for the successful daily operation of these platforms.
  • Use all available metrics to support data-driven decision-making, including testing, analysis, reporting, and targeting. Manage, organize and present digital analytics to provide insights and recommendations to help all departments’ planning processes.
  • Manage publicist and press relations, IDA’s year-round publicity calendar and media pitches; track and respond to evolving trends to maintain IDA’s profile and leadership in the field.
  • Provide quality control on all external communications including press releases, email marketing, social media, web content, and advertising
  • Ensure all communications-related components are fulfilled as required by grant and sponsorship commitments.
  • Collaborate with the development team in the planning and execution of traditional and digital fundraising campaigns.
  • Responsible for updating, maintaining, and staff adoption of IDA’s brand and style guides; ensure adherence to branding and standard communications practices for all staff.
  • Collaborate with Documentary Magazine staff on content.
  • Manage, mentor and support the growth and development of two communications team members that oversee the day-to-day communications functions of IDA.
  • Develop and track communications department budget.


  • Self-starting and creative, excellent planning and project management skills, able to shepherd projects from conception to completion.
  • Thorough knowledge of best practices and latest trends in nonprofit marketing, web analytics, SEO, digital content, and organic/paid social as well as traditional media.
  • Commitment to DEIA goals and an ability to effectively communicate those values as central to the organization’s work; tested ability to communicate cross-culturally.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, in both interpersonal and group settings. Attention to detail; strong editing, proofreading, and QA skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people who have diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Ability to productively manage multiple assignments and competing interests, while consistently delivering assignments on time and on budget.
  • Calm under pressure and in rapidly changing circumstances and willingness to go the extra mile to get the job done.
  • A systems thinker, able to see the big picture, and connect priorities and initiatives together.
  • Understanding of the fields of documentary and nonfiction filmmaking and its constituencies, including relevant events in the field such as film festivals, pitch forums and markets, convening and field-building efforts.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a relevant field.
  • 7-10 years minimum experience in nonprofit marketing and communications preferably in arts and/or nonprofit settings.
  • Experience working within the documentary industry is highly valued. A passion for the arts is a requirement.
  • Proven proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Apps, and other team collaboration applications such as Basecamp, Asana, and Airtable.
  • Demonstrated expertise in digital communication technology, including Drupal, Constant Contact, EventBrite, social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram etc.), Neon, and analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics). Ability to quickly adapt and learn new online communications tools.
  • Professional proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, great creative graphic and print design abilities and a strong understanding of branding fundamentals.
  • Experience with HTML5, CSS, and PHP with an understanding of responsive design.
