Alternative Technologies has been a leader for more than 35 years in providing technology support to nonprofits and small businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since the days before desktop computers, we have helped thousands of clients fulfill their mission by supporting their use of changing technology.
Our staff of 34 is made up of field technicians, engineers, helpdesk techs, account managers, project managers, and our finance, admin and management teams. For all of us, supporting the Bay Area’s nonprofit and small business community is our shared vision. We have served more than 3,000 organizations over the past 35 years, and currently provide ongoing service to hundreds of groups, including Clean Water Action, East Bay Community Law Center, HIP Housing, Jackson & Hertogs LLP, Jewish Community Center of the East Bay, Mission Housing Development Corporation, Progress Foundation, Rainbow Grocery, Sogorea Te Land Trust, Swords to Plowshares, Transgender Law Center, and Women’s Cancer Resource Center, to name just a few.
In 2022, the employees of Alternative Technologies purchased the company from the retiring founder, becoming one of just a few worker-owned cooperatives in the technology sector.

About the Position
The Finance Manager is one of three positions in the Finance & Administration Department at Alternative Technologies, joining the Office & HR Manager and the Finance & Compliance Specialist. It is a full-time, non-exempt, in-person position based in our West Berkeley office, and reports to the department manager. The position will start on January 5, 2026, though there can be some flexibility in the start date.
We are looking for an experienced finance professional dedicated to accuracy, integrity, and the success of our business and that of our clients. Our client base and our staff are both extremely diverse and this is not a corporate environment. Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $70,000 - $75,000/year commensurate with skills and experience

Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- Verifiable minimum of 2 years full-charge accounting experience using Quickbooks Online
- Experience and fluency in double-entry bookkeeping
- High level of proficiency with MS Office programs especially Excel, Word and Outlook
- Experience with ConnectWise Manage PSA would be a plus
- High comfort level with technology; aptitude for learning new specialized software
- Outstanding spoken and written communication skills
- Natural curiosity and affinity for improving processes
- Demonstrated devotion to integrity, accuracy and confidentiality
- Able to establish and maintain excellent relationships with customers, vendors and colleagues
- Able to work independently and flexibly in an atmosphere of quickly changing priorities
- Very strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Grace under pressure and a sense of humor!
- Supervisory experience a plus
Specific Job Duties
- High-volume Accounts Receivable / Accounts Payable
- Bank deposits and account reconciliation
- Prepare regular financial statements and reports for management staff
- Manage vendor accounts
- Respond to customer questions
- Month-end and year-end tasks including preparation of reports for accountants
- Collections
- Maintain orderly electronic and paper records
- Handle required government reporting
- Other duties as determined by manager or managing director
